Ireland has long been known as a mecca for game angling – whether it is wild salmon in spate rivers, silver sea trout in small coastal lakes, or beautiful spotted brown trout in broad lakes and limestone rivers.
Spring salmon and grilse run many rivers, large and small, in counties Galway and Mayo, and can be caught on fly, spinner or bait. Everything from double-handed rods on rain-swollen springtime rivers to single-handed rods and small flies for summer grilse, salmon fishing is as varied and exciting as ever.
Sea trout have declined in Galway but runs are still good in Mayo, where river, lake and estuary all provide exciting sport. Brown trout abound in rivers and lakes throughout the region, with the great western lakes the jewel in the crown. Corrib, Mask, Conn/Cullin and Carra are all names that evoke the image of hard-fighting beautifully spotted brown trout, and the mayfly season is famous the world over for the quality of the fishing.
